Surnia ulula
Lake Umbagog, Maine.
1889 Maine
Oct.19 B.Umbagop. saw my second Hawk Owl this evening at about 5.30. The sun had just set and he faced the strong light in the western sky. I recognized him nearly half a mile away by his peculiar shape, plump, puffy, like a Partridge or a Short-eared Owl. He was perched on the tip of the spine of a slender dead ash on the shore of the island. His back was towards me. He moved his tail every second or two raising and then lowering it rather slowly (This motion I noticed in the one shot on Oct 12th). As my boat rustled in the grass near the tree he turned his head one his back Owl-fashion & looked down at me once or twice then resumed his steadfast gaze at the light in the west. I shot at him & probably wounded him. He flew about 100 yds. on a horizontal branch over the top and alighted in another dead tree, followed and shot again Wounding him severely this time. He then flew across the pond and settled down into some second growth. Following I startled him from a branch only a few yards above the ground but lost him. His flight was straight as an arrow and very swift & swift the long wings moved with a rapid humming motion very similar to a Sharp-shinned Hawk, with occasional intervals of sailing. His wedge-shaped tail was very conspicuous. Flying, his body looked long and thin but sitting it was full and puffy in shape.
24 Shot one on Moose Pt. Like the other two it was perched on the top of a slender birch stub. It flew twice alighted both times on the tip of a dead branch. Flight direct with quick wing strokes & intervals of sailing. In its attitude was like that of the others. It jerked up its tail frequently, once to 45 deg. Its form was plump & puffy. It was much more alert and active than the others. (See Journal it head up & down & turned it quickly, looked as large as a Barred Owl for further notes)
