Lake Umbagog, Maine. Asio accipitrinus 1895. Sept. 22. One at Porter Point Test. arving a little after sunset butterfly. a Great Blue Heron in the swamp adjoining way. I first heard him moving in a great owl & then saw it rising in circles with the Bird a yard or two off; it also circled at every turn as if the Bird would dive down on it often apparently flitting its down the lake when the thing which was unseen tallily body for a moment seemed against locality. The bird moved but more nearly around himself. After a few impressions he left the Heron, disappeared. A little later when the distance was getting past he came back & returned about 100' or so round immediately adjoining; and disappearing in the gloom, occasionally pitching thickly upward 15 or 20 with a slight haste & most of the time was only a yard or two above the trees. It was deep gliding motion; now & then a few people in general motion; then a long glide with the flight up to right altogether towards him to the edge was, finally would have been a moment. The bird came I squandered like a crow. Flight for me 7 only heard and seen after he was within 10 or 12 feet of my head. After he had gone a little way I squandered again; he could stand for 7 mins when (6'x8')/ft./after this the world was surrounded on both in an odd flight of being. he flapped out of sight & turned into a thicket, Great trees. 4
