Paleo anatum
1896 Lake Umbagog.
August 20 21st & 27th
20 At about 10 A.M. as I was walking near the landing
at the Soda House a large Drake Hawk appeared soaring in circles
overhead. Presently it flitted off down a long ravine over the
marsh and on reaching the pond swooped down towards the
water several times in quick succession but it did not get
anything & I could see nothing in the pond. Finally it
came back a little high, in one again was joined by a
smaller male Drake Hawk which both darting in circles
in company, darted off over the Cambridge River toward
the 2 screening a little more than I think both were
old birds but of this I could not make sure.
21st A very large & flying about over the marshes at the
Outlets. On coming to the river opposite the mouth of
Leonard's Pond the hawk rose to a height of about 30 feet &
then darted down with great velocity skimming the water with
such force as to half bury himself & making a noise like that
produced by a Thrasher Hawk. When the rose I saw distinctly
that the bore nothing in its talons. We had just passed over
this stretch of river in a boat & I am very sure that there
was no Drake or other water fowl there. Did this Paleo start
at a fish? The place where the descended was near the middle
of the river where the water is free from weeds & rather deep.
