Haliaetus leucocephalus.
Maine (Lake Umbagog).
1879.
June 12. Coming up the River in my boat I passed near an Eagle sitting on a dead stub; returning a short time afterwards with my gun I easily paddled to within thirty yards of him and shot him with number three shot. He was apparently only winged and struck savagely at my paddle, driving his talons deep in the soft wood. He was an immature bird, probably of less than a year old and fairly alive with large winged ticks of a kind peculiar to raptorial birds.

May 25. Shot a young female apparently a this year's bird; not fat; smelled strongly of musk; exceedingly tough and hard to skin; infested with small bird-lice.
1892.
