Buteo platypterus.
Maine (Lake Umbagog).
1980.
May 22. I see them nearly every day. When the wind blows
fresh they rise to an immense height over the woods,
breasting it on motionless wings and screaming with ap-
parent delight. Their shrill ca-hoo'o'o, ca-hoo'o'o'
is unmistakable.
" 24. Shot one in the ordinary fall plumage. It was sit-
ting on a stub over a wood path with numerous small birds
dashing about it and making a great out cry. Unfortu-
nately it was too badly shot to be preserved.
Buteo pennsylvanicus.
1981.
Maine (Lake Umbagog).
(May 14). A pair at the extreme end of the Swett Cove.
" 25. Shot an adult male. Irides pale brownish-yellow;
tarsi and feet chrome-yellow.
