Accipiter fuscus Lake Umbagog, Maine. 12 1889 Maine Sept 6 L. Umbagog. One sailing about over the woods passing a flock of Bluebirds closely but apparently neither noticing nor alarming them. Another sitting on a fallen log on the river bank just outside the edge of the woods neat and motionless evidently watching for prey. I have observed that this species chooses such a perch much often than do any of the other Hawks. I paddled past the bird just mentioned within fifteen yards and then turning the canoe shot it. It proved an adult & in nearly perfect autumn plumage. It was alive when I picked it up and clutching at me most vindictively with its talons but did not attempt to use its beak. Accipiter velox. 1889, September 6. Lake Umbagog. Mouth of Peaslee's Brook. I heard a Bluebird and looking up saw a large, loose flock passing overhead at a considerable height flying in a south easterly direction. I counted 28. Near them was a Sharp-shinned Hawk beating about apparently neither noticing the Bluebirds nor causing them alarm although he kept on for some distance near them. Less than five minutes later I came suddenly on another Hawk of this species, a fine adult male, sitting on a large smooth log on the river bank just outside the woods. I paddled quietly past him within fifteen yards and then turning the canoe shot him. 14
