Maine (Lake Umbagog).
1871.
May 30-
June 10. Several pairs seen. A nest with young was found
by J.G.Rich several years ago.
1873.
Aug. 23.
I see them frequently sailing about over the lake.
They have here a mellow whistle, resembling that of the
Purple Martin.
1874.
Aug. 11.
Saw one flapping his wings as though unable to rise
from the bank of the river where he was sitting. As I
approached he made a final effort and carried off a
large fish which he was eating.
" 18.
Saw five or six. They are invariably very shy here.
Sept. 5.
One dropped within sixty yards of me and seized a
large chub, striking the water with a noise like that
produced by the falling of a heavy plank.
1880.
May 23.
Three circling in company, uttering their musical
pheu-pheu,a and at intervals screaming in shrill tones.
1881.
May 27.
Saw one carrying a great bunch of sticks in its
claws. It rose near the extremity of the Swett Cove and
flew off over the woods.
