Falco sparverius. Maine (Lake Umbagog). 1871. June 9- 14. Saw a female nearly every day in the pasture opposite Mr. Peaslee's, she undoubtody had a nest on one of the tall stubs on which she usually perched. 1873. Aug. 2. Saw a female at the Outlet. 1874. Sept. 2. Two flying swiftly and close together like Pigeons, passed over me and I shot one of them. " 10. Saw two at the mouth of the river chasing one another, flying easily and playing about like Swallows. " 14. One flying over the meadows in the usual Swallow-like manner. Once I was positive that he turned sharply upwards and caught a flying insect. 1880. May 17. One seen. Sept. 7. Shot an adult among the stubs near the mouth of Cambridge River where it was chasing some Colaptes austi-tus, apparently in sport. " 9. Three playing about near the mouth of Cambridge River, chasing one another like Swallows. Another at the Outlet. 1881. May 13. A pair among stubs near the Stone farm. " 17. A pair are haunting the Lake shore near the house apparently preparing to breed. I saw them to-day sitting on the tops of adjoining dead firs. Occasionally one, probably the male, would mount upward and fly rapidly in great circles over and around the spot, frequently bending his wings downward and quivering them rapidly, at the same time uttering a shrill rattling cry. At times both would fly off together and chase one another through the air describing all manner of beautiful curves and sometimes pitching down nearly to the water. I know no bird which alights as gracefully as this little Falcon; it invariably chooses the top-most twig, often a very slender one, and strikes with wonderful precision and decision, often scarcely slackening its speed until the moment when it closes its wings. Its usual cry is a shrill rattling kae-hee, kae-hee, kae-hee. 109
