1897. Lake Umbagog
September 15ᵗʰ - 22ⁿᵈ - 30ᵗʰ
Sept. 15 Just before sunset I startled a young Sparrow in a flooded meadow near Red's Rock, M.R. It flew to a thick set of bushes and was just disappearing when a large female Pigeon Hawk darted in after it going completely out of sight & making a loud clamoring sound as it entered the dense foliage. The next instant it emerged without the Sparrow & flew off.
" 30 Early this forenoon a Pigeon Hawk alighted on a dead branch of an elm near the bath house. Here it sat very erect and nearly motionless save in respect to its head which it turns frequently from side to side as if looked keenly about cautiously on the water for prey. It also bobbed its head slowly up & down every now & then precisely in the manner of an Owl. At length it took wing and flew swiftly off over the marsh. Just as it was passing out of sight behind some trees it suddenly changed its course, darting off to the left. The next instant I heard a Solitary Sandpiper near-weeping shrilly & almost immediately saw the bird strike the water in a core of the reeds. No doubt it dived to escape the Hawk but I did not see the latter again. The Sandpiper, a moment later, rose above the trees and climbed high into the sky uttering its cries incessantly as it flew off over the woods.
