Lake Umbagog, Maine. Nest.
1896. We crossed the pastures to the west end of the Peasley
May 17. White farm where Watrous showed me a Partridge's nest which
he had found yesterday. It was in a very exposed place, quite
outside even the outer line of wild cherry and other under-
brush that formed the border of the woods in the side of a
mound under a few dead sticks (the remains of an old brush
fence) in the full glare of the sun and actually in the field
itself rather than in the edge of the woods. I took three
photographs and started the bird while trying for a fourth at
a distance of about 4 feet. She did not return although we
waited an hour.
