Partridge have been extraordinarily
scarce this year about L. Umbagog;
or in one locality viz. Millinocket
Stream within period large flocks were
seen in August & early September,
when I started for home (Oct. 16)
The guides about Milton reported that
the birds were increasing coming out
of the woods "as they term it.
This always happens soon after
the leaves fall, as nearly as I could
gather, but few young have been seen
this season.

length and looked keenly around,
turning his head in every direction.
Bobbing it up and down. Then he
circlèd from 5 or six times covering a
space about a foot square, stepping
slowly and gracefully, puffing, raised
Tail about 1/2 spread - carried rather
high and moved up & down slightly
finally he sat down facing across
of the log on which, as I could see
clearly, his tarsæ and tail were
