Bonasa umbellus togata.
Lake Umbagog.
1886,
October 19.
While listening heard a loud rustling and saw a mouse
bustling about in the dry leaves. Shot at it and was searching
in the leaves where it had been sitting, when another and louder
rustling attracted my attention. The sound approached steadily
and presently a very large fine grouse appeared, stalking grace-
fully through the bushes, nodding his head at each step. After
watching him a few moments I shot him.

Lake Umbagog.
Near Bottle Brook
I took it (a bird calling) for a Wood Duck. Jim said it
was a Partridge. He was doubtless right for on paddling to the
spot I discovered a Grouse sitting on a log and shot it. At the
report of the gun several others rose and alighted in the trees
and bushes.

Lake Umbagog.
Pine Point.
Jim shot two Grouse near the camp and I a third which
came within 15 yds. of our fire, but which I followed nearly
him
quarter of a mile back into the woods. Finally killed over a
steady point. He was squatting on a bed of green moss under large
hemlocks. I saw his glistening eye first, then made out his head
and finally the whole bird.
