Tringoides macularius.
Maino (Lake Umbagog).
1879.
June 17. Set C-4. Slightly incubated. Nest on small rocky
island near Lake House; sunk in the ground and prettily
concealed under some drift wood. Female sitting; she
glided away silently beneath the drift wood and then took
wing. The male for sometime past has frequently soar-
ed and hung over the spot.
1880.
May 22. Shot one on Cambridge River midway between the dam
and meadows.
" 26. Nest with one egg on the island where I took a set
last year.
" 31. Set D-4. Fresh--on ground on small island within
six feet of the spot where a set was taken last year;
nest in deep hollow evidently scratched by the bird ;
female sitting; she permitted me to approach within a
few feet, then scuttled off spreading her wings, tumb-
ling about on the ground, and even uttering a sort of
harsh scream that I never heard before.
June 9. Set E-4. Fresh--on ground under drooping branch of
alder; female rose before we landed and flew off in si-
lence. Same island where set D-4 was taken, and doubt-
less the second laying by the same bird.
Sept.7. A few still lingering about the lake shores, but
they are far outnumbered by the Solitary Sandpipers
" 15. In great abundance along the river to-day.
Oct. 18. Shot one.
