Lotamus flamius
1896 Lake Umbagog.
August 17 (in company with 28 in company 3 / Canoe Run
a J. underwriters) with 2 J. underwriters Pier Colls House.
September / 2 (with 28 3 (a gentleman) 6 100+ 7 (20
J. underwriter with 19, mule) Wier Sargeant (3 dead shot)
1 jail first.)
The ordinary call note is phere- phere a sometimes phere is often
a double but sometimes only a single whistle (there are I
think never more than two whistles). The pitch is lower
than that of the call of J. melanocephalus or rather lower than
all except the finish (or the next to the finish) note of their
call. Both syllables of the double whistle are on the same key.
The tone is smooth & pleasing.
In general appearance and movements the Lesser Yellow Leg
is an exact counterpart of the Greater. It has the same
graceful, measured step when feeding, the same
exquisite grace of outline, proportion and posture when
standing erect and still, the same tilting motion of the
body and lengthening & shortening the neck when alarmed
or suspicious. Its flight also is essentially the same
as that of its big relative but it is rather less swift
and it loses the effect of momentum so conspicuous in
wider time of the aerial evolution of the larger species.
