Less numerous than usual owing probably to the fact that the
water was at the proper pitch to afford a good feeding ground on-
ly for a short time in September. On the 13th we found a solitary
bird of this species which was remarkably tame. It was feeding
on the bank of the river and would allow us to approach within
three or four feet before flying. Several times I almost touched
it with one of the oars. We took some excellent photographs of it
at distances ranging from four to ten feet. When forced to fly
it usually alighted on a stump where it would remain a few min-
utes and then return to the place whence it started.
