Irenja Bairdii
1896. Lake Umbagog.
Sept. 5 On flying about over the marsh occasionally alighting for
a moment but appearing restless & uneasy and refusing to join
any of the flocks of Grebe or a pair of Cig. [illegible]
which were feeding quietly on the pond at the Outlet.
When the bird came so near that I plainly saw its
buffy breast band & white under parts but I got only one
long flying shot & missed. I know the flight was many
times too much better advantage than on the 3rd and I
should now write it creep or crept instead of kept.
1897
Sept. 7 Two birds seen by Pinchin on the same beach near Whales Back
Cove and described by him as "about the size of
Bonapartes Gull but with buffy breast & grizzled
wings" were probably of this species. They were very
tame.
