Arenaria interpres.
Lake Umbagog, Maine.
1896. As we were paddling out of our cove this afternoon two
Aug.27. Turnstones, the first I have seen here for many years, came
flying past me from behind and alighted near the end of Pine
Point where they ran about over the rocks on the water's edge.
They started again just as I got within gun range. Following
I shot them both (fuller account in Journal). Both proved
to be young birds. They uttered a short, rolling, throaty
whistle as they flew.
