Lake Umbagog, Maine.
1889 Maine
Sept. 4 S. Umbago - Started seven in the mossy run ground and shot Whistling four. Five whistled loudly, two rose with a heavy flutter & fluttering I shot both of the flutters and found that they lacked the "whistling quills." The two whistlers that I killed both had those quills. All four birds were in full mount covered with fine feathers. They all lay on springy or dry ground near springs among alders. Two birds acted very oddly, flying only a few yards at a time and running swiftly in Main right as soon as they alighted. They running came in dense alders & I actually failed to overtake and get them fairly on wing so both escaped although the dog headed them a long distance.
