Philoela minor. Philoela minor ✓ Flight at Upton, Maine. Alva Coolidge tells me that he and Mr. Betton killed twelve Woodcock among some poplar sprouts behind the bell house on the evening of Oct. 4 & morning of Oct. 5th. There had been a snow storm on the 4th & the weather was very cold. The whole area of these poplars is less than an acre. They did not kill all that they saw. Upton, Maine Oct. 4-5, 1891 Lake Umbagog, Maine. Philoela minor Habits 1889 Sept. 4 Woodcock run almost invariably some distance before a dog before rising. Often they run to the extreme edge of the corn, then they finally flush They are very adroit at going off in line with some brush that intervenes between them & the sportsman. If they can once locate the latter They rarely will fly towards him. Of five birds started to-day three whistled, two run with a heavy flutter away like a half grown Grouse. Three of the five lay among alders on wet ground, two (the flutterers) were among brakes on dry ground.
