Lobipes hyperboreus 1898. Lake Umbagog. August 23! sea middle of lake. September 8! Off Pine Point 9! September 8 Saw our several times this forenoon while boating between Pine Point and the Outlet. It was very restless as usual alighting on the water many times but came running long in one place. Once it rose from the water & flying nearly horizontally upward to a height of about 5 ft. completed a flying circuit of rather large size and then alighted again on the same spot. I sailed to within 15 or 20 ft. of it on one occasion to make sure of my identification. On rising from the water it usually utters a short grunt, quite any like that of a sandpiper.
