Botaurus lentiginosus.
Botaurus lentiginosus
Mr. W. S. Willings shot a Bittern today
on the marshes below the Rock House. Batchelder
got it and skinned it. It was cased in fat
and the intestines were enveloped with thick
layers. The stomach contained a beetle and
nothing more. This Heron is a rare bird
here now at any season.

I started a Bittern on the marsh at
the outlet. It uttered an ooh, ooh as it
flew.
