Crymophilus fulicarius.
Lake Umbagog, Maine. Phalaropus fulicarius
1884 September 18th 30' Oct. 2nd 6'
Oct. 2 Two on the flooded meadow at the Outlet
feeding in a patch of grass. They knew
about my activity apparently picking something
from the green stems. Their motions were
exceedingly graceful, their necks long &
slenider. They allowed us to approach within
short range & I killed both with one shot.
This is the first time I have known them
to occur on or near a marsh. The morning
was cloudy but perfectly calm.
