Porzana carolina
Lake Umbagog, Maine.
1889 Maine
Sept. 19 L. Umbagog. Shot a young bird which fell in the lake about
20ft from shore where the water was perhaps a foot deep.
As I waded out to the bird it dove with all the agility of
a duck and swam under water several yards keeping close to the
bottom and using its wings precisely like a duck. After remaining
under nearly half a minute it came to the surface and
floated with half spread wings apparently much exhausted
but a moment later it dove again. This time it tried
to get hold of the bottom raising a cloud of muddy soil
that finally obscured and concealed it. It was shot in
the body.
20 While lying in wait for ducks at about 6.30 P.M. saw a Rail
flying about over the marsh in the twilight. There it passed
me skimming close over the grass its legs drawn up its flight
swift and straight.
24 Carolina Rails scattered all over the Moon Point marsh this
evening calling to one another kek, kr-r-ck in low, feble, grating
tones. The water was fully two feet deep among the grass.
