Botaurus lentiginosus 1896. Lake Umbagog. September 2(water marsh) 4(ice) 5(ice) Sept. 4. at 11a. M. (the day clear & cool with high n.w. winds) I saw a Bittern coming over the flats from the direction of Brande's Pond. It flew across the river & alighted in the open marsh. I do not think that any one flushed it but it is not improbable that some men who were shooting at ducks one hour or two before had driven it out & that it was returning. The Bittern flies freely by day in spring but I believe to be under fledged in autumn. 1897. September 25¹ 1898.
