Oidemia perspicillata. Lake Umbagog, Maine. In a small pond. 1897. Purdie and Will went to Errol in the forenoon and did not Sept.18. get back until near sunset. They found four young Surf Sco- ters in a flooded meadow just above Errol Dam. Will taking them for Black Ducks landed and stalked them killing one. The others did not leave the meadow and getting the boat he se- cured them all. It is indeed remarkable that they should have chos- en to alight in such a small forest-encircled sheet of water with the Lake so near at hand but I have known them to be killed in the Androscoggin before this. 1899. Off the mouth of Cambridge River (I was sailing one of Oct.1. my canoes) I came upon a female or young Surf Scoter which was floating with its head buried among the scapular feathers and apparently fast asleep. The canoe was moving at great speed and its prow was not more than six or eight feet from the unconscious bird when the latter happened to raise its head and discovering the danger rose hurriedly and flew out over the Lake. 82
