Oidemia perspicillata. Pelionetta perspicillata Lake Umbagog, Maine Oct. 17, 1853 A flock of at least 100 in the lake. We first saw them above the narrows sailing about 1000 feet or more high. They flew in a perfect V for awhile then in a thick cluster. At the distance of at least a mile the sound of their wings was distinctly heard sounding like the jingling of thigh-bells. After making the circuit of the upper part of the lake they swept down like metors and alighted near the middle. We paddled to them getting Oedemia perspicillata Abnormal occurrence on L. Umbagog. Upton, Maine Oct. 11, 1862 George Hayward killed five of these "Coots" from a flock of seven that he found in the lake near B. Point. I saw the bird less than an hour after they were shot. All were immature, probably young of this year. He says they were very tame and that he rowed up within shot without any difficulty. They may have formed part of a larger flock as much heavy firing was heard up the lake this morning. I think I have no positive record of this Pelionetta perspicillata 1899. Oxford Co., Me. Oct. I one, Lake Umbagog.
