Charitonetta albeola.
Maine (Lake Umbagog) Bucephala albeola
1875
✓ Oct. 13 One brought in by some sportsman who killed it from a flock
of them in the Megalloway coming up to them without much difficulty.
✓ Oct. 26 Five at Moose Point diving close in shore. Tried to paddle on
them but failed although my boat was carefully grasped. They
would fly when I went at least fifty yards off, and after going only
three or four hundred yards sight and begin diving against their drive
were short but they disappeared like a flash. Flying, their wings
showed a peculiar rapid und motion unlike other ducks and
reminding one of a Woodcock.
Daniel Hayward tells me that late last autumn after most of
the Lake had skimmed over he found about forty of these Ducks
Bucephala albeola.
1880.
Maine (Lake Umbagog).
May -- ✓ Mrs. Bartlett has an adult female shot on Lake Umba-
gog this month.
June 1. ✓ Saw a fine adult male near Poslee's Brook this morn-
ing, and a female in the same place late in the after-
noon. The latter was feeding in the grass at the wa-
ter's edge and was very tame, allowing us to get within
close gun range. Captain Poslee tells me that he has
seen the pair several times lately. I also saw another
adult male on the Megalloway this morning.
