Bucephala americana
Lake Umbagog, Maine.
1889 Maine
Sept 6 L. Umbago - Two flocks one of seven, one of two birds, in shallow
ponds near the mouth of Cambridge River. They
were rather shy rising at about 200 yds as the large
flock passed me at about this distance I distinctly
heard the humming-top noise of their wings although
this was not as loud as it is in winter in Mass. The
air was perfectly still at the time, the lake as smooth
as glass. I do not remember ever hearing this duck
whistle here before. I saw all nine birds distinctly enough
to make sure that none were in the full plumage of
the adult ♂.
