Clangula clangula americana.
Lake Umbagog, Maine
1884
Oct.23. A flock of fow at the head of Great Island en
interested me very much. I watched them through
my glass for a long time as they were feeding
along the shore just at the edge of the grass.
They acted a good deal like Gulls, making
short dives, often only burying the head & fore
part of the body, splashing the water about by
their rapid movements, cutting about in all directions
& chasing one another in play. They were very
low showing only a slender line of back. A little
later, however, after they had caught sight of me

A young Whistler which I shot at and
probably missed dead and upon reappearing
swam off uttering a curious low croak not
unlike the spring note of the Rana sylvestris
I chased it for some time. It was very cunning
dodging on me when hard pressed and
always making out into the rough water.
It invariably showed its back never sinking this
like a Grebe
