Fired into a flock of five killing four of which there was young drakes showing tail-tips & single feathers of the field plumes. The fourth bird was a young ♂. I watched the flock for half an hour or more. They fed wholly on the surface of the water coming down apparently vegetation swimming about very slowly with wings lowered to flutlets out certain but little glass. Not even dive on of them "left off" its body. The flock went ashore in our flues & walked about on the mud standing & running very erect and with as much gain and ease as waders. 1897 September 7 (20) Whales Rock 15° (10) Curtis Meadow Cambridge Ruins Cove 15 (6) (1) 21 (4) (3) 22! 25 (3) at 9:00 ; 1898.
