Mareca americana.

Lake Umbagog.
Errol Mt. Pond.
Melvin just after I had returned to my first station. Rising high
in air it came over me at great speed evidently having made up its
mind to leave the pond, but I brought it down before it reached
the woods, and upon getting it in hand found it to be a fine young
male Bald-pate. [On re-examination (in the light of better knowledge of diagnostic
characters recently discovered) this specimen proves to be an apparently
typical example of the European species, Mareca falcata, W. B., 1911.]

Lake Umbagog.
Curtis Meadow.
Finally (came) a flock of eight or ten Ducks which I am
nearly sure were Widgeon. The last came within long gun range and
I fired a shot at one of them. The bird first lagged, then to-
wards [sic], and finally pitched headlong down through the trees
on the hillside on our left. It must have been dead before it
reached the ground but neither Jim nor Will could find it.
