Larus delawarensis.
Lake Umbagog.
1883,
October 26.
After breakfast I discovered a flock of strange Gulls on
the river beyond the first pond. I took them to be Ring-bills.
They alighted in a thick cluster, sometimes on a mudbank, some-
times on the dead stubs. One was dark, the rest snow white. We
afterwards tried to shoot one but found them just a little too shy.
I got within good range of one behind the river bank, but hearing
a Duck quack, did not fire and finally the Gull saw me and flew.
