January Lake Umbagog
8, 9.
On February 6, 1909 I received an adult
male of this species in the flesh from Aldous Brooks,
r. Dutton's caretaker at Metallic Lodge. He wrote
to me that he found it dead on the ice of the
lake "not far from Metallic Island". This happened
on January 8, just after a heavy rain followed
by freezing weather. The next day (January 9) he
found another bird, similar to the first but
with "more white on the throat," about 1/4 mile
towards Tyler Cove." The specimen sent me was
emaciated but not excessively so. On examining it
I saw no mark of injury. The stomach was
perfectly empty. Apparently the bird died of
starvation. Its skin is now in my collection.
What became of the other specimen I do not know.
