Lake Umbagog.
1909.
June 22,
About 7 A.M. before the wind had risen a fine Loon in Loon
fully adult male plumage surprised us by appearing in our little Cove
which is now almost everywhere grass- grown owing to the recent fall
of water. When I first saw the bird it was swimming through the grass
about fifty yards away, having evidently come through the Channel behind
the island. It did not seem to notice the house boat at first although
several of us were standing about the deck talking. After making one
short dive it finally returned through the channel. We saw it after-
wards well out on the flooded meadows. The water in our Cove is now
less than two feet deep.
