Oct. 8. 9 On the night of the 8th two of these Grebes called at intervals for more than an hour - from 8 to 9 P.M. During most of this time they appeared to be in the water off the Butler but once came from a bird which was evidently flying past our camp.
They made two sounds a peaking
they made two sounds a pealing pulsating whistle hollow in tone & much like the moan of a Golden eye mews (yet vocal, or thought) and a harsh stident ear - as r.r. The latter cry was usually repeated two or thrice times in quick succession. It was invariably preceded by and sometimes alternated with the whistle. Both sounds were very loud & penetrating.
- easily heard at a distance of a mile
On the morning of the 9th one of these Grebes was floating off St. Point making these sounds. Unfortunately I did not see him while in the act. The whistle, may possibly be produced by the wings.
