Gavia imber.
1889,
September 12.
Lake Umbagog.
Near Moll's Rock.
Heard a Loon utter the long-drawn er-loo with sometimes
a third syllable given in a rising falsetto tone, the whole
or-1oo-ée.
1890,
October 22.
Lake Umbagog.
North Bay.
We next tried to paddle to four gray Loons which were
cruising about in deep water swimming in a cluster like Ducks, but
they scattered and dove before we got within range. There were
two others in sight at the same time.
1894,
September 5.
Lake Umbagog.
Shot from steamer.
As we were nearing Metalluc Island the engineer killed
a gray Loon with a charge of B.B. shot at about 75 yards. He
fired three times and apparently did not hit the poor bird until
the third shot, although it made very short dives only going a few
yards under water each time. These young Loons have little fear
of the steamer and are easily killed.
1895,
September 6.
Lake Umbagog.
Pine Point.
Strange cry.
At about 9 A.M. a strange, low, yet penetrating, hooting
or tooting sound like that made by blowing into a bung hole, coming
from the fog-enshrouded lake and strange to Will Sargent as well
as myself tempted us to put off in one of the boats to investigate
it. After paddling nearly a mile we came upon two Loons one of
which was making this sound.
