Podilymbus podiceps.
Lake Umbagog, Maine.
1900.
Sept. 16. Off the mouth of our boat cove and close to the rocky
shore of the Point a Pied-billed Grebe was floating idly on
the water at about 9 A.M. I paddled out to within about 30
yards of it when it flew, rising with some difficulty and go-
ing directly into over the Lake for about 200 yds when it a-
lighted again. It was a young bird with dark stripes on the
cheeks and neck. It is unusual to find this Grebe in deep
water off a rocky shore and equally unusual for it to take
wing when approached.
