Mergus serrator.
Maine (Lake Umbagog).
1872.
June 9. Saw a pair of Sheldrakes on R Meadows which I was
very sure were of this species [?] They are said to brood
here. [a very dubious record This seems to be now (F.A. 1911.) W.R.]
1881.
May 23. Two female Sheldrake flying together passed near
our boat off the Outlet. They looked small, and Al-
va Coolidge insists that they were not Goosanders,
I think they may have been this species. This I still consider
possible W.R. 7is 1911.
1883.
Oct. 10. Shot a single bird, a young male, near the mouth of
Black Island Cove. Iridos brownish-yellow, deepening
in tint towards the pupils. Fat but tender and easily
skinned.
