Merius americanus.
Aldana Brooks tells me that while crossing the Rapid River
"carry" this summer he saw an old Shelldrake accompanied by a brood
of young barely half grown appear in the road in front of the buck-
board which crosses the carry each day. The old bird soon took
wing and disappeared through the trees in the direction of the
river but the young keeping close together ran ahead of the horse
(which was walking all the time) for more than half a mile not once
attempting to leave the road. On reaching Middle Dam they scuttled
down the bank into Richardson Lake and swam off aong the shore.
He did not see the mother bird rejoin them. At the place where they
entered the road the Rapid River was only a few rods distant.
