Goosanders and Hooded Mergansers in company.
Less than half a mile above the Sluice we surprised a flock of Ducks composed of two Sheldrake and five Hooded Mergansers. I got a long shot as they rose and stopped one of each species.

In Black Island Cove I sailed down of a swarm of young Sheldrake not larger than Pigeons. I took them at first for Teal. They swam in a close cluster and finally "raced" off along the surface.

Three bends up (Cambridge River) came on 7 Sheldrake, nearly full grown but pinionless. Shot both barrels and missed. Farther on came up with them again. Shot one at 60 yds. The others scuttled around the bend and disappeared. . . .
Back to camp by noon. On way "Don" started five of the young Sheldrake from grass and I shot two.
