1895, September 29. Olbiorchilus hiemalis. copy 8 Lake Umbagog. Pine Point. Sings. Late this afternoon a Winter Wren which had passed the day in or near our camp wood pile sang several times in an under- tone but giving the full song in a finished manner. Winter Wren July 24 1907 Call notes of young or only fully furnished a low Zee-e rather thin of a very shy species of a rather small chirruping greenish bird with them called tick or tick. 1908 Troglodytes hiemali Lake August 17 copy 9 Umbagog It is not at all unusual to find Winter Wrens in rather open places at their season of migration. Here do they cling as on two sides of their forest cover when on their breeding grounds. I see this afternoon, while starting some shoes of the leaves in my course, I started one from under large stones or boulders at the water's edge, a road or more the nearest trees or bushes, among large boulders at the very edge of the water where it may have gone to drink although I suspect it went something for spiders or other insects. I have definitely found Winter Wrens among tall grass on the lakeshore but never before, I think, among perfectly bare rocks such as these just mentioned. 32
