August 17 copy 4 I have long been in doubt as to the precise character or meaning of the prolonged notes of Swallow and other notes which the Barn Swallow indulges in so freely and which are so very pleasing to human ear. Many writers seem to regard them as representing the birds song, in support of this are the facts that they seem to be uttered only by the male and oftenest in the breeding season. But I have them now almost as frequently out in May or June and I am by no means sure that they are used only by the male, but if they are of this definite character, the same Swallow for it is clear everything all my various calls but the call-in - two- calla ones are not heard more frequently nor to return or each one in the season as they I believe do represent a song.
