Melospiza lincolnii
1889 Maine
Sept. 11 L. Umbagog.
Shot a 3 in fine autumnal plumage at the western
dge of the Sargent farm in a dense arborescent
swamp. My dog started it from the ground when it
flew up into a bush over a heap of fallen logs. Although
I could not see either color or markings I recognized
the bird at once by its peculiar actions & shape. It
twitched its tail up almost like a Wren and displayed
a well-marked crest. After the dog had passed it
flew down to the ground again. I advanced and
passed within five feet of the log heap stopping and
examining it closely. Supposing it had moved on I
hunted all the neighboring thickets & finally returned.
As I was about to kick one of the logs the Sparrow
flew up from among them and alighted on a twig
within ten feet of me. This time it sat quite still
looking at me curiously & apparently without fear.
I backed off slowly and shot it. It was in thin
plush.
