Quiscalus quiscalus aeneus.
Lakes Umbagog, Maine. Quiscalus aeneus
1855. In autumn.
Oct. 27. - Clear, warm, and calm all day.
Starting at 10 A.M. I spent the day on
the lake following the west shore to the head of
the Sweet Corn. About opposite the southern end of
Great Island I heard the clamor of Blackbirds in
the woods and landing found a flock of about
fifty Quiscalus aeneus with perhaps half as many
Molothrus chestnut in the tops of some large yellow
birches when they were making a great racket and
apparently doing nothing else. I could not get
within shot of the main body so had to kill one
of the outsiders a fine Q. aeneus in perfect fall
plumage. I also shot a Hylotornis that was perched.
