Pearson-1990 26 Brion up at the University. She thought the little one was Ephedra frustillata. Maybe this is a synonym of E. andina? The big one she didnt even guess at and said there are 3 species of Ephedra in Patagonis, 7 in Argentina. Eddie had passed on my suggestion that it might be Retamilla as in Hoffman's Chile book, but she didnt comment on that. Suggested Donald Bran at INTA or the Instituto Darwininano in BA. November 30- Left in the female's cage the soft core of a fresh bamboo shoot. In the morning, she or the young had nibbled only a couple of small samples of it. December 16- Left the male overnight with newly gathered male Ephedra in bloom, female Ephedra in bloom, non blooming Ephedra with long tender shoots, and cipres from Valle Encantado with debarked patches. Also a piece of pound cake, but no water or apple. He ate lots of male and female blossoms, cut numerous pieces of their stems, but did not touch the Ephedra with the long tender shoots and did not seem to eat any of the cipres. December 17- Left male overnight with very small piece of apple, small piece of bread, and male and female ephedra, in urine cage with wire floor. He ate apple, some of the bread, and demolished the Ephedra (buds nibbled open, branches cut into 1-inch lengths). No urine on the floor of the cage, about 0.5ml in the bladder, not viscous. He weighed 86g. 57 droppings.
