Ctenomys sociabilis
April 19. Arroyo Carbon below La Lipela. Saw no fresh diggings at the usual
place 10km N Nahuel Huapi; ditto at 20km N near the new trout farm, and 30
km N at the Arroyo Carbon place. Talked with the puestero on Estancia La
Lipela while I was camped at Arroyo Carbon. When asked about small mammals
he pointed to the west (Cuyin Manzano) and said there were ratas de la
sierra there. When asked about tucos, he said that there were none here
but lots across the Limay River. He said the tucos make a sound like their
name, the rata de la sierra makes a more squeaky sound, which he imitated;
says they live in burrows like tucos. i.e. He distinguishes sociabilis
from mendocinus!
