This locality on Estancia La Fragua is about
3 km. E of Estancia Verde Moreno (or Saguna Sol
Fuerza). The lake is 2 m. mud flats now, the Porcupine
standing in the middle of the lake part.
After daybreak I explored two seeps on the
south side of the road a few hundred meters west
of the turnoff to the microwave tower. Green turf,
meads, burdock, and chassey trees. Some Chassey
(Discaria) had been cut years ago with trunks
10" diam. Unbelievable numbers of Peltodorus
droppings around these seeps.
Two short hours on road back to Barilobo.
A car with searchlight cruised up and broke the
road about 11 p.m.; I heard one shot. Home 11 a.m.
April 21 Barilobo. Dinner at Tarold's with S. Merton, Martin, Sybil
Brandt, Andy---, a young Argentine studying porcupines.
April 22 Barilobo. Rain all day.
April 23 Settled showers. Sept 3 p.m. for Estancia
Verde Moreno, Settled clouds. Put 11 cage traps for
Peltodors, cheese bait, at 1 km. 3.6 on south side of
road of a seep. Lots of droppings. Sr. Marful not
home. Then found a fine campsite about 100 m
above the gate on the way to the microwave
Station, a seep, Berberis, chassey, bunchgrass,
prunus, lots of Peltodorus droppings. Put out 4
more cage traps plus 7 hole traps. Several
clusters of Peltodorus holes within 30 m of the
