6 Aug 1964 Kokae, Waoea Canyon via Kukui Trail 38. Upat 7. After eating bits, we drive to Waoea for grab - oranges, V-8, cookies, carrots, pears. We find out that the Xian have told the Lodge Manager of our presence, so therefore we must leave. Maggie has O.K.'d all, but has been carried a great deal of trouble. We can leave our gear with the museum lady, who is most kind. We find 3 mice - labeled birds, telling her name, which she wrote - #kopra (instead of Anisianar), Hawaiian Wody (called Common) to Newell's (unlabeled.) We attempt another Aldakai Swamp Trail a road leading off to the left from the Mohihi Rd. at the sign for the Koa Forest Preserve. Our jable jeep failed to make a grade, so we had to turn back. At 1500, our gear stored at the Museum Lady's house, we began our descent down the Kikilau Trail - 4 mi. to the River 2300' below the rim. We find the trail down very good, & camp under a tree in the middle of a green forest - ground run wild & all over the ground. One horse visited our camp, so we put our food in a tree before descending the last 1/4 mi to the River. A swim at 1630 is most refreshing after our late dawn. The water is brown but not muddy, & the swim most refreshing - tadpoles abundant. We eat & head out to a listening pt. Our first hill is covered with lantana & prickly pear & is extremely rough going, A sheer cliff finally
