Kauai - 31 July 1944
34.
A about, sickish, lazy. Perhaps Newell's
theater is due to be found thus.
We then go to the Kalalau lookout. Here is
the most astounding, stupefying view ever
to behold, sheer falls (cliffs) dropping 4000'
to the canyon below, with jagged green edges
silhouetted against the blue of the ocean
beyond - green beyond imagination, the
rim we are upon clung with tree ferns
& Ohia trees, while Apapane & Zosterops
flit anywhere in the trees. Never have I
beheld such a sight. I should like to
return again & again. One does not see
Kauai or Oahu, that is like knowing Calif.
without seeing Yosemite, Port John, or
Joshua trees. We walk down along a road
in the Mohihi Puna Rd. & the Alakai Swamp
Trail. 6 mi. of rough road, 5 mi. of tough
trail to the swamp cabin. We do not get into
the swamp, just reaching its border, but
do see: Apapane, Creeper, Iiwi, Anianiau,
Akapa, Elepaio, Zosterops, Chinese Thrush,
Hawaiian Duck, Jungle Fowl, + Tropics
birds. The area is a phantasmagoria of
Tree Ferns, tall grasses, bushes, Ohia, Koa,
steep canyons - green green green. As one
descends the road the introduced ferns & flora
slowly drop out, leaving at least native plant.
