Pearson 1985 Journal 45 Oct. 17 arrived Santiago, Chile, in a.m. mustard, lilies, Paulonia in bloom, dill coming up, all the vegetation in exotic/California, all the trees in the city & suburbs are imports. Stayed with Clark & Rose's Warren. Drove a half-hour east or northwest to a "Park" called Los Arrayanes and climbed around for a half-hour in staid rocky country with streams looking for degrees, but saw nothing such. A desertly aromatic shrub in bloom; a gorgeous big broom with a tall spiky and curious blue/green/scarlet many blossoms. Oct. 18. Guided tour of city + museums. Left on train at 6:30. Alfalfa in bloom, masses of California Poppies. Oct. 19 arrived Osorno 11 a.m., just caught last bus to Bariloche. Only a few patches of snow over the Pase (Boyehue). The lenga up high not leafed out yet. Not many dead bamboo. Reached Bariloche about 6 p.m. Oct. 20 Drizzly, occasional suns. Tulips in bloom, a few Scotch broom, Lombardy poplars just looking out. Drove up Cerro Otto to the Bamboo Clumps; they haven't started growing yet, no signs of blossoms, brought snow dead or damaged stalks roses to look for parasites (see specimen account), found no earth cores; maybe because of very little snow this winter.
